Rangson 84's Afghan Tour.

I've been in Afghanistan theater for almost 4 months now and I thought alot about back home how we enjoy our freedom with our families/friends. I have made friends with so many people here from different camp. The other day I was having MRE for lunch on HLZ waiting to catch my flight on Chinook back to my home base in Sharana, I started to think about the soldier how they are going thru life at Afghanistan and believe me It's not like what U saw on TV. At small camp, They have corns, beans, and… Continue

Brad Barton To My Extended Panther Family...

I've had a couple people ask, so I'm going to post the news here and a few other places... My wife has had a cough and a sore shoulder for several weeks. Over the last few days, we have finally discovered why. She has a mass in her chest. We do not know what it is at this point, but all signs are good that if it is a cancer of some sort, that it has not spread anywhere. It is fairly large, nearing 7 inches long, and is located behind the sternum, between rib cage and lungs, and above the heart… Continue

Rangson 84's It's Funny when....

You know the things that we enjoy most that we love doing 20 year ago is happening all over again. I love going out racing on Highway 58 (front of Kuwei hospt.) @ about 10:30pm the japanese cop would come and we would head to Ishikawa and race there. At Midnight or so we would go race @ Ikea Island and watch the local "DRIFTS" around those steep cliff/ curves. Now my 18 yrs nephew is into racing and JDM scene. I remember buying a "HOT" Mazda RX3 Savana from Sanabe Junk yard and putting fake plat… Continue

Jon Yim Coming soon from KPBS San Diego: Panda Tales!

I had to pleasure of working on this project for my station (KPBS TV/HD/FM). We recently aired this 1 hour documentary, shot in HD, as part of our September pledge drive. Here's the teaser we sent to PBS HQ and a few affiliates across the country:
This is a true San Diego production, which we at the station are quite proud of. Even the music score for this was composed and performed by local musician Paul Montesando. And the answer is 'yes'...this program… Continue

Jon Yim This makes my mornings @ PBS worth it...

One of my new fave shows in our kids lineup: "Martha Speaks"... Here's the opening to the show (this is after we wallow through the underwriters and funders...):
Best part about this show...it's sophisticated. Definitely not for the Pampers crowd...but it does help expand vocabulary skills. And the animation is also sophisticated...it doesn't look like some it was some animation studio's "community service" project because they had to do it. Continue

Jon Yim My "Great Escapes"...

My wife and I get into this discussion often. If money were no object -- or we hit the lottery big time -- we plan to run-away to one of these locales: 1. Okinawa 'Natch. Probably not the main island, but maybe one of the outlying islands in the prefecture -- Miyako, Ishigaki, Iromote or Kume. Having visited these islands over the years, once you depart the ferry or airliner, set your clock back about 100 years. Mostly fishing and farming villages on the outlying islands and very… Continue

Jon Yim Some Okinawan music for your day...

A contemporary song by two different artists to enjoy... "Shima Uta", literal translation: "island song." The first artist is Rimi Natsukawa (夏川 りみ), an Okinawan folk singer who performs Ryukyuan music. Her genre is sometimes referred to as "Okinawan folk" -- blending traditional Okinawan music forms with modern elements, giving her a unique sound. In this video she wears a modern dress made of traditional Okinawan print cloth, called "bingata." The instrument she plays is a… Continue

Jon Yim KSBK & JORO AM 880, Naha

The Far East Network (FEN) wasn't the only English-language broadcaster on the island of Okinawa. Unlike Mainland Japan, GIs and English-speaking civilians on the island had a choice to tune-to on their radio dials. There were two other English-language civilian radio stations on Okinawa prior to Reversion (handover from US administration to Japanese control) in 1972: KSBK, a Top-40/talk station staffed by American civilian DJs and KSAB, a religious broadcaster. KSBK was owned by… Continue

Brad Barton The Old Board

Well, I was hoping to have a gentle transition, but the old board's database crashed again tonight... and I'm tired of rebuilding it. I will try to rebuild it one more time to archive the posts that were there so we can look back at them at will.. but I think we definitely need a new home now. I vote for this location... how's everyone else feel? Continue
